In 2014, we released Issue No. 8 of AintBad: The American South. Since then, we have witnessed the evolution and changes in the region. To us, The South remains both a reality and a fiction, a conceptual and a cultural entity. Our questions to you are: Why are we still interested, inspired and motivated by this region? Perhaps it is the rich, troublesome history, the political undertones, the shifting power dynamics, or maybe just the aesthetics? In this new decade, we want to see and discuss why the American South is still so relevant in our ever-changing society and culture.

For Issue No.15 of AintBad, we are accepting photographs and essays which engage in contemporary conceptions or interpretations of the American South. How is it being defined, re-defined, undefined and co-defined within the contemporary conceptions of the American South? We are particularly interested in representing perspectives from those of you who are from, or are currently making your work in the American South. Whether you call the South home, or you call it a place to make work, we want to see what you are creating.

In addition to the publication, our goal will be to create a traveling exhibition of work which will include a selection of photographs from both the printed publication, and the call for entry submissions, and will be shown throughout the American South during 2021 and 2022.

We are accepting works made in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia.
